Federal Reserve Bank Notes are a great part of history that can enhance any U.S. paper money collection and are distinguished by their brown seal and serial numbers. Add one of these collectible pieces of currency to your cart today!
Although over 3.1 million of these were printed for Chicago, this is a much more elusive issue than their contemporary green seal (FRN) counterparts that were issued for the Chicago district.
The 1929 series was actually a cost-cutting redesign, the government shrank all U.S. currency by about 25% to reduce paper and ink costs, and standardized designs across denominations. This happened just as the Depression was beginning. These were issued specifically during the banking crisis years (1929–1933) as an emergency measure to get more currency into circulation when public confidence in banks was collapsing. They were backed by U.S. government bonds held by the issuing Federal Reserve Bank rather than gold directly. - Specifications
