The 1934 series marked an important transition in U.S. paper money. Following the Gold Reserve Act of 1934, the redemption promise found on earlier Federal Reserve Notes was changed. The previous wording, "Redeemable in Gold on Demand at the United States Treasury, or in Gold or Lawful Money at any Federal Reserve Bank," was removed and replaced with, "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private, and is redeemable in lawful money at the United States Treasury, or at any Federal Reserve Bank." This reflected the end of gold redemption for the public and the nation's shift away from the gold standard.
