The 1918 $1 Federal Reserve Bank Note represents an important chapter in the evolution of the United States monetary system. Issued during the final year of World War I, these notes were obligations of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and were backed by the assets of the issuing bank. Featuring the familiar portrait of George Washington, the Series 1918 Federal Reserve Bank Notes bridged the gap between the large-size National Bank Notes of the early 20th century and the modern Federal Reserve Notes that would eventually replace them.
