Issued in 1886 (and again in a slightly revised 1891 series), this was the first and only time a woman appeared alone as the primary portrait on U.S. paper currency. The Treasury's use of Martha Washington was noted at the time as "an innovation" — up to that point, only men had been featured. Her portrait came from a painting by Charles Schussele. The notes were printed as Silver Certificates redeemable for silver. The Fr#217 with its large red seal is one of the more visually striking notes of the era and a genuinely historic piece.
