MS-63 PCGS 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle (No Motto)
Saint-Gaudens' initial model for this coin was a Double Eagle, rather than a $20 Gold piece. This made it so Saint-Gaudens had to do more work, as he had to create a new design from scratch. Saint-Gaudens initially wanted his design to be based on the 1783 Flowing Hair Dollar, however other sculptors also submitted designs that Saint-Gaudens considered. Saint-Gaudens sent his models off to the Mint in 1907 with no name attached to them. The motto "In God We Trust," which was used on all Double Eagle designs after 1866, was not added until Saint-Gaudens' death. Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagles were minted from 1907 to 1933, though Saint-Gaudens only lived to see the first year of production. Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles are known for their "ultra-high relief" design, which gave them an unprecedented three dimensionality. They are also popular among collectors because of their scarcity; the Saint-Gaudens’ Gold Double Eagle was minted at a time when high quality coins had become scarce, so the Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagle became sought after by collectors as well as investors.

Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle coins are one of the most popular designs in United States history. Saint-Gaudens continues to be respected by both sculptors and coin collectors alike.
