Product Details
Step back in time with this exceptional 1881-S Morgan Dollar, graded MS-65 by NGC, a testament to the San Francisco Mint's renowned striking quality.
Think of bustling San Francisco in 1881, a city at the heart of the American West's economic boom, fueled by vast silver strikes. It was in this vibrant atmosphere that the San Francisco Mint produced a remarkable 12,760,000 of these iconic Morgan Dollars, each a symbol of the era's fierce monetary debates and the "Free Silver Movement." This particular 1881-S example, certified in an impressive Mint State 65 by NGC, stands out for its sharp details and captivating luster, a hallmark of the San Francisco Mint's commitment to quality during its heyday.
The genesis of the Morgan Dollar lies with the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, a political compromise designed to inject more silver into the nation's economy. Tasked with bringing this vision to life was the gifted English engraver George T. Morgan, who joined the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. His masterful design graces both sides of this coin: the obverse features a striking profile of Lady Liberty, modeled by Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams, her cap adorned with "LIBERTY" and surrounded by thirteen stars. The reverse presents a majestic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, encircled by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the "ONE DOLLAR" denomination.
This coin represents more than just its .900 purity (90% Silver, 10% Copper) and substantial metal content of 0.7734 troy ounces. Measuring 38.1 mm in diameter and 3.1 mm in thickness, it embodies the very essence of American resilience and expansion. Collectors often seek out San Francisco-minted Morgan Dollars for their superior strike and overall aesthetic appeal, and this 1881-S MS-65 NGC piece is a prime example of why. It’s a perfect addition for those who appreciate not only the intrinsic value of precious metals but also the powerful narratives etched into each historic coin, connecting them directly to the people and events that shaped a nation.

I've purchased many coins from Apmex and have yet to be disappointed or had to return anything. I recently bought the first 5 'S' mints in ms65 along with a nice wooden display case to hold and show them. My birth was in 1978, the 100th year anniversary of the morgan, maybe thats why I like them so much I think it's pretty cool. I'd advise anybody to buy from Apmex due to their quality control, easy site to navigate to find almost anything you want, very competitive pricing (usually the best), a huge ever increasing invintory, also lets you know when a certain coin you want is back in if it wasn't there the first time, lastly, fast (usually free) shipping. You can't go wrong, this site is a collector's dream. I love Apmex!$!
