  • Product Details
This 1884-CC Morgan Dollar, graded MS-63 Prooflike by PCGS, offers a captivating link to the American West's silver boom. Struck at the legendary Carson City Mint, it embodies an era of significant economic change and frontier development.

Imagine the bustling silver mines of Nevada in the late 19th century, their output fueling a national debate and ultimately giving rise to the iconic Morgan Dollar. Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, these silver dollars were a direct response to the era's economic currents and the powerful Western mining interests. Among the various mints producing these coins, the Carson City facility, identified by its distinctive "CC" mint mark, holds a special allure. Situated in the heart of the Comstock Lode, this mint operated intermittently, and its coins became lasting symbols of the American frontier.

The 1884-CC issue, with a mintage of 1,136,000, carries a fascinating tale of survival. For decades, a vast quantity of these very coins remained hidden away in U.S. Treasury vaults, untouched by circulation. The rediscovery of this massive hoard in the 1960s, later released to the public through the General Services Administration (GSA) in the 1970s and 80s, means that many examples, like this MS-63 Prooflike specimen certified by PCGS, are preserved in stunning condition. The "Prooflike" designation highlights the coin's sharply reflective fields, creating a mirror-like background that enhances the frosted devices, a visual characteristic highly sought after by enthusiasts.

Designed by George T. Morgan, an English-born engraver who later became Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, the dollar's artistry is rich with symbolism. The obverse features a graceful profile of Lady Liberty, her Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, symbolizing freedom and agricultural abundance, encircled by the motto "E Pluribus Unum" and thirteen stars. The reverse proudly displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, signifying both readiness and peace, all encircled by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR," with the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST." This particular coin, composed of .900 fine silver with a metal content of 0.7734 troy ounces, reflects the standard of its time, weighing 1.93 ounces with a diameter of 38.1 mm and a thickness of 3.1 mm.

For those drawn to the tangible legacy of the Wild West and the unique history of U.S. coinage, this 1884-CC Morgan Dollar offers a direct connection to a vibrant period of American expansion.
