Reading Company's full line between Philadelphia and Reading opened December 9th, 1839. During the heyday of the Industrial Revolution Reading became an industrial titan. Operations including coal mining and iron making, shipbuilding, along with canal and sea-going transportation helped to make Reading the largest corporation in the world by the 1870s.
Pennsylvania Railroad, also known as the "Pennsy", was founded in 1846. The largest railroad by revenue and traffic during the 20th-century, the Pennsylvania Railroad still holds the record for the longest continuous dividend history at more than 100 years. For many years the President of the Pennsylvania Railroad was considered more powerful than the President of the United States - as the budget was larger than that of the U.S. government and it employed approximately 250,000 workers.
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad - with an original line from the port of Baltimore, Maryland, west to the Ohio River at Wheeling and Parkerburg, present-day West Virginia. The Baltimore and Ohio built the Carrollton Viaduct bridge in 1829, which is the oldest railroad bridge still used (by CSX transportation) in the world. This 297 foot stone bridge was built over Gwynns Falls River in Baltimore, Maryland.
