  • Product Details
Capture early 20th-century America with this 1901 Morgan Dollar, graded MS-60 by NGC. This Philadelphia issue, despite its mintage, is scarce in uncirculated examples, reflecting its active role in commerce before loss or remelting.

The year 1901 marked the dawn of a new century, and the U.S. Mint at Philadelphia was still busy producing the iconic Morgan Silver Dollar, a coin deeply rooted in the nation's economic landscape. Born from the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, these silver dollars were a product of legislative efforts to support the burgeoning silver mining industry in the American West. While vast quantities were struck each year, the story of the 1901 Philadelphia issue is particularly compelling for numismatists.

Despite a robust mintage of 6,962,000 pieces at the Philadelphia Mint (which, notably, does not display a mint mark), the 1901 Morgan Dollar is surprisingly scarce in higher Mint State grades. Many of these dollars found immediate circulation, serving the practical demands of daily commerce, particularly on the East Coast. Later, a significant portion of the total production met the fate of the melting pot under the Pittman Act of 1918, which aimed to supply silver for the British Empire during World War I. Unlike many other dates that surfaced in large Treasury releases in the mid-20th century, the 1901 Philadelphia issues remained largely absent from these discoveries, further solidifying their unexpected rarity in uncirculated condition.

This particular 1901 Morgan Dollar has been certified in Mint State 60 by NGC, offering a tangible link to an era of industrial growth and shifting national policy. The coin features George T. Morgan's distinguished design, with the obverse showcasing Lady Liberty in profile, her Phrygian cap adorned with sprigs of cotton and wheat, and the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" above. The reverse presents a majestic bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching both an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing peace and preparedness. Encircling the eagle are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "ONE DOLLAR," along with "IN GOD WE TRUST." Struck from .900 fine silver, each coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, measuring 38.1 mm in diameter and 3.1 mm in thickness, embodying a specific moment in American monetary history. This piece invites an appreciation for both its artistic merit and the unique historical forces that shaped its availability today.
