This certified MS-62 NGC Morgan Dollar is a true silver icon of American history. These coins capture the spirit of a nation finding a way through economic debate and westward expansion.Imagine holding a piece of American history, a tangible link to the late 19th and early 20th centuries – that's what you get with a Morgan Dollar! Minted between 1878 and 1904, and then again in 1921, these beautiful silver dollars are more than just currency; they're a story in your hand. Each one comes graded MS-62 by NGC, ensuring you receive a coin with excellent eye appeal and only minor imperfections.
The Morgan Dollar came into being during a fascinating period. After the "Crime of '73" demonetized silver, intense pressure from Western mining interests led to the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. This act mandated the creation of new silver dollars, leading directly to this iconic design. These coins were at the heart of the "Goldbugs" versus "Silverites" debate, symbolizing a nation grappling with its monetary future and the vast expansion of the American frontier.
Designed by the talented George T. Morgan, an English-born engraver who would later become the U.S. Mint's Chief Engraver, the coin is a masterpiece. The obverse features a striking left-facing profile of Lady Liberty, often said to be modeled by Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams. She wears a Phrygian cap and a wreath of cotton and wheat, representing both freedom and America's rich agricultural heritage. Flip it over, and the reverse proudly displays a majestic bald eagle, clutching an olive branch (for peace) and arrows (for strength), a classic American symbol.
These hefty coins are made of .900 fine silver and .100 copper, giving them a pure silver content of 0.7734 troy ounces. Each coin weighs 26.73 grams and measures 38.1 mm in diameter, carrying a denomination of 1 Dollar. While exact mintages vary from year to year and mint to mint (they were produced at Philadelphia, Carson City, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Denver), millions were eventually melted down under the Pittman Act of 1918, making many dates scarcer than their original production numbers suggest. Owning an MS-62 NGC Morgan Dollar isn't just about collecting; it's about holding a piece of America's industrial growth, its spirited debates, and its artistic legacy, all in one gleaming silver package. It's perfect for anyone who loves historical U.S. coinage and wants a tangible asset with a rich, unfolding story.
