Product Details
This 1892-O Morgan Dollar, graded MS-62 by PCGS, offers a glimpse into a captivating era. Struck at the historic New Orleans Mint, this silver dollar embodies a pivotal period for the American South after Reconstruction.
Imagine New Orleans in 1892, a bustling port city navigating the currents of change. This was a place of vibrant culture, but also of significant social and economic transformation in the wake of the Civil War. That very year, the city saw a remarkable general strike, a powerful moment of unity among Black and white laborers fighting for better conditions. It was also the year Homer Plessy challenged segregation, setting the stage for a landmark legal battle that would shape American history for decades. This 1892-O Morgan Dollar, with its "O" mint mark, was produced in that dynamic environment, carrying a bit of that era's spirit.
The Morgan Dollar itself was a workhorse coin, designed by George T. Morgan, a British engraver. The obverse features a profile portrait of Lady Liberty, styled after Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher, while the reverse displays a majestic eagle with outstretched wings clutching arrows and an olive branch. Each coin weighed 26.73 grams, with a purity of .900 fine silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of pure metal. Measuring 38.1 mm in diameter and 3.1 mm in thickness, these dollars were substantial in hand and in the economy.
With a mintage of 2,744,000 pieces in New Orleans in 1892, these coins were an important part of the financial landscape, particularly in the South. After the Civil War, the Southern economy was struggling, and the large silver dollar, backed by the Bland-Allison Act, provided a much-needed tangible asset and expanded currency supply. Unlike in some parts of the North where paper money was common, the physical silver dollar held particular appeal in a region wary of depreciated paper currency and desperate for economic stability. This particular coin, certified MS-62 by PCGS, means it's in Mint State condition, preserving the details of its design with only minor imperfections. It's a genuine artifact, offering a direct link to the economic and social fabric of the late 19th century.
