Product Details
The classic Morgan Silver Dollar, impeccably graded MS-65 by PCGS, a brilliant relic from a pivotal era, showcasing George T. Morgan's timeless design & representing westward expansion.
The Morgan Silver Dollar stands as a monumental emblem of a rapidly evolving America, minted during a period of intense growth and change between 1878 and 1904. Its very existence was born from the Bland-Allison Act, a legislative response to the outcry from silver miners and a testament to the nation's bimetallism debates. This specific offering features coins expertly graded Mint State 65 by PCGS, signifying exceptional preservation with full, rich luster and only extremely minor contact marks visible under magnification – a testament to their enduring quality.
Designed by the brilliant English engraver George T. Morgan, these dollars capture the spirit of an era. The obverse proudly displays a captivating left-facing profile of Lady Liberty, modeled by Anna Willess Williams, adorned with a Phrygian cap and a wreath of cotton and wheat, symbolizing freedom and America's agricultural prosperity. Below Liberty's neck, one can discern the designer's initial 'M'. The reverse features a majestic bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows, embodying the dual ideals of peace and preparedness. Encircling this powerful device are the legends "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination "ONE DOLLAR."
Each Morgan Dollar is a substantial piece, measuring 38.1 mm in diameter and 3.1 mm in thickness. Crafted by the U.S. Mint from .900 fine silver and .100 copper, these coins contain a significant 0.7734 troy oz of pure silver. While the specific mint year and mint mark (which could include Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, or Carson City) will vary for each coin in this collection, every piece carries the legacy of the series. Though exact mintage numbers vary by year, millions were struck before the Pittman Act of 1918 led to the melting of over 270 million Morgan Dollars, increasing the rarity and historical significance of surviving examples. Collecting an MS-65 PCGS Morgan Dollar is securing a piece of American artistry and part of a profound historical narrative, perfect for the discerning collector seeking to connect with the nation's industrial and cultural ascent.
