Pre-33 Gold Coins
Until 1933, when the United States removed the dollar from the Gold standard, the U.S. Mint produced a variety of Gold coins for use in commerce, ranging from the diminutive Gold Dollars up through the hefty $20 Double Eagle, containing almost a full ounce of fine Gold. While minted in large numbers, untold numbers of these Gold coins were melted down in the 1930s as the United States government attempted to discontinue the circulation of Gold, even going so far as to order the confiscation and mandatory buyback of Gold coins held by citizens at the time, reducing the finite supply of these popular Gold coins.
The Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle
Minted from 1907-1933, the Saint Gaudens Double Eagle coin contains 0.9675 oz fine Gold, alloyed with Copper to improve its durability and wear characteristics. The design, created by famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, is considered by many to be among the most beautiful to ever grace U.S. coinage. Due to the high value of $20 Gold coins, many were kept out of circulation and stored away in vaults, making high-grade coins surprisingly attainable given their age. PCGS, one of the most trusted names in numismatics, has certified this coin, guaranteeing not only its authenticity, but its exceptional condition.

A coin with such history to it and much more beautiful in real life! Coin is in great condition for a coin that is almost 100 years old (I received a regular 1927). The story of St Gauden and melting the coin is worth the low premium over spot. I love this coin! Great value for the MS-64.

I received a 1908 No Motto in a classic PCGS "green holder". Although a most common date, the coin in MS-64 is incredible. I think I could resubmit and pull a 65 grade out of it. Full luster, orange and green tones, Just a beautiful example.
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Easy to Sell
- Mint Condition
- Recognized Brand
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Have bought a few of these and all were very satisfactory for the grade. I feel these are the best value in original collectible gold coins, as far as condition of the coin, with only a slightly higher premium over bullion + spot, compared to a much higher premium for MS65. I will look to buy more hopefully in the future.
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Collectible (lower mintage)
- Easy to Sell
- Mint Condition
- Recognized Brand
- Bottom Line

If you want an example of pre-1933 gold to add to your portfolio, this is a beautifully designed coin. I bought one in 2013, but as the spot price of gold has come down, so has the price of these coins (like quite a lot).. There are other gold coins that have better held their value due to stronger numismatic characteristics.
- Pros
- Attractive Design
- Cons
- Common (higher mintage)
- Bottom Line
- No, I would not recommend this to a friend
