Graded MS-63 by NGC, this 1878 Morgan Dollar represents the iconic first year of issue for the celebrated series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin features the “7/8 Tail Feathers” design revision, an important adjustment in U.S. coinage history.

The year 1878 marked a dramatic resurgence of the silver dollar in American commerce, a direct consequence of the Bland-Allison Act. This legislative mandate compelled the U.S. Treasury to purchase vast quantities of silver and convert it into coinage, primarily to appease Western silver mining interests and address the demonetization of silver earlier in the decade. From this legislative crucible emerged the Morgan Dollar, a coin that would quickly become one of the most beloved and collected series in numismatic history, designed by the prodigious English engraver George T. Morgan.

Morgan, handpicked by Mint Director Henry Linderman, meticulously crafted the iconic imagery. The obverse features a majestic rendition of Lady Liberty in profile, her cap adorned with wheat and cotton, believed to be modeled after Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams. The reverse presents a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, encircled by a wreath. However, the initial 1878 dies presented a slight ornithological inaccuracy: an eagle with eight tail feathers. Recognizing this, the U.S. Mint swiftly moved to correct the design to seven tail feathers, a characteristic of the American bald eagle. Rather than discarding existing dies, many were expertly modified, leading to the fascinating "7/8 Tail Feathers" (7/8 TF) variety, where faint remnants of the original eighth feather can still be discerned beneath the corrected design.

This particular 1878 Morgan Dollar, graded MS-63 by NGC, is a prime example of this historical adaptation, specifically the "Weak" variant of the 7/8 TF, meaning the traces of the underlying feather are subtle. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint—indicated by the absence of a mint mark—this coin is part of the substantial 9,759,300 mintage attributed to the 7 Tail Feather varieties of that year. Crafted from .900 fine silver with a metal content of 0.7734 troy ounces, it boasts a diameter of 38.1 mm and a thickness of 3.1 mm. Beyond its intrinsic value and impressive state of preservation, this dollar serves as a tangible link to a dynamic era of American economic policy and artistic ingenuity, making it an essential acquisition for collectors who appreciate both historical narrative and the subtle nuances of early mint production.
