Product Details
This 1898 Morgan Dollar, MS-64 NGC, links to the Gilded Age. George T. Morgan's iconic design features Lady Liberty and a bald eagle. Minted from .900 fine silver, it shows the artistic and economic forces of a nation.
Imagine America at the close of the 19th century—a nation bustling with innovation, industrial growth, and the ongoing saga of westward expansion. The 1898 Morgan Dollar emerged from this dynamic era, a tangible representation of both economic policy and artistic vision. Born from the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, which mandated the U.S. Mint purchase and coin significant amounts of silver, these dollars became a symbol of American resilience and opportunity.
The genius of George T. Morgan, a talented British-born engraver who would later become the U.S. Mint's Chief Engraver, is evident in every detail. On the obverse, his portrayal of Lady Liberty looks left, adorned with a Phrygian cap symbolizing freedom, interwoven with wheat and cotton representing the nation’s agricultural bounty. Thirteen stars encircle her, a nod to the original colonies. This particular coin, from the Philadelphia Mint (without a mint mark), had a substantial mintage of 5,884,000 pieces in 1898, yet finding examples in such remarkable condition becomes increasingly difficult with time.
Flipping to the reverse reveals Morgan's majestic bald eagle with wings outstretched, clutching an olive branch of peace and arrows of strength. Above, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is prominently displayed, flanked by the declarations "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" below. This impressive coin measures 38.1 mm in diameter and 3.1 mm thick, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of .900 purity silver, contributing to its substantial weight of 2.335 ounces. Graded MS-64 by NGC, this specific dollar showcases excellent mint state preservation, retaining much of its original luster and sharp detail, making it an exceptional acquisition for those who appreciate both historical coinage and the artistry embedded within.
