This 1878 Morgan Dollar, graded MS-65 by NGC, is the first year of this iconic U.S. silver coinage. It features the distinct "8 Tail Feathers" eagle on its reverse, a short-lived design element, making it a significant numismatic issue.

Imagine America in 1878, a nation still rebuilding after the Civil War and grappling with new economic policies. This was the year the U.S. Mint introduced the Morgan Dollar, a coin born from the Bland-Allison Act, which aimed to stabilize the silver market by mandating large federal purchases of silver for coinage. This particular 1878 issue is special—it’s among the earliest examples of a design that would soon become one of the most collected silver coins in American history.

The responsibility for this significant new dollar fell to George T. Morgan, a talented British engraver who had recently joined the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. For the coin’s obverse, Morgan envisioned a powerful yet elegant portrayal of Lady Liberty. He found his inspiration in Anna Willess Williams, a local teacher, whose profile would forever grace the coin, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, symbolizing agricultural prosperity. Encircling her portrait are the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and thirteen stars, representing the original colonies.

However, it's the reverse of this 1878 dollar that holds a truly unique distinction. Morgan’s initial design featured a majestic American bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows, a classic depiction of peace and defense. But, in a detail that quickly caught the attention of numismatists, this early version, known as the "8 Tail Feathers" (8 TF) variety, depicted the eagle with eight tail feathers. This was an anatomical inaccuracy for a bald eagle, which typically has an odd number of tail feathers. The U.S. Mint swiftly corrected this detail, first to a "7 over 8" variety, and then to a standard seven tail feathers. With an initial mintage of 749,500 pieces from the Philadelphia Mint (which doesn't show a mint mark), the 8 TF variant is an important early example for those who appreciate the evolution of coin design.

This specific 1878 Morgan Dollar is certified MS-65 by NGC, indicating its excellent uncirculated condition. It contains 0.7734 troy ounces of .900 fine silver, measures 38.1 mm in diameter, and carries a face value of one dollar. For those who are captivated by the initial iterations of iconic coin series and the fascinating stories behind design changes, this 1878 8 TF Morgan Dollar allows enthusiasts to connect with a dynamic period in American coining.
