Pre-1933 Gold
The U.S. Mint issued its first gold coins in 1795. During the height of the Great Depression in 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt prohibited American citizens from holding monetary gold. He ordered all gold coins be returned to the U.S. Treasury, where millions were melted into gold and then cast into gold bars. This was an unprecedented legislative act to help fight the Great Depression. By doing so, many collectible Gold coins were affected and the course of history for monetary gold was changed forever.
These federal government recalls and meltdowns made these previously common gold coins very rare. Today, the surviving pre-1933 Gold coins are fixed at an extremely limited supply. This fact has made pre-1933 Gold coins some of the most desirable items among collectors and investors. APMEX is proud to offer a superb selection of these harder-to-find classic coins. The historical significance of these coins are vitally important and will provide diversity and significance to any investment or collection.
$20 Gold Coin Design
Several changes were made to the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle design during the years the series was in production. The coins issued from 1907-1908 do not include the motto "In God We Trust," which wasn't added until later. In 1912, the number of stars surrounding Lady Liberty on the obverse changed from 46 to 48 when New Mexico and Arizona became states.

I'm somewhere between a stacker and a collector, so I'm not very sentimental. But, oh boy, I have loved this coin for 30+ years and treated myself to one. For now. There may be more. There is some wear on a portion of the edge, resulting in a few stars being missing. Otherwise, there are a few acceptable scratches, what you would expect in a 100-year-old coin. 10 out of 10, will buy again.
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

'Just received first of two ordered... It is a beautiful coin. of course it was circulated... of course its not perfect...first one is 93 years old and it is as cherished today as it was almost 100 years ago. trust me! It had an inflation adjusted cost of about 300 dollars in 1924... something to ponder! back then you could purchase a toaster for one dollar and fifty cents.

- Attractive Design
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

I want to first say that "I Love APMEX"... I have purchased a "cleaned" coin from APMEX and was very satisfied with the results. Now when I got this "cleaned" coin to my dismay it was severely scratched on the front and even the mint mark was not even noticeable not to mention that it was still dirty with some black substance on the front and back. I just think that there should be be a category of scratched coins along with cleaned. It looks bad and would be harder to sale and definitely get a less price for. the other cleaned one I got was just as good as a VF or better to me. just bright and clearly "cleaned" no bad scratches at all. I still Love APMEX and still gave them a 4 stare and would Still recommend and continue to recommend friends and family.

I've made many purchases from APMEX so they earned my trust and business long ago. I've purchased AU Saints in the past and was hesitant to get some of the "cleaned" coins but figured I could exchange them if they were not as advertised. Well, at a $20 savings each these are all beautiful with no dings or scratches. Actually I can't see any difference between these and my AU coins.
- Pros
- Easy to Sell
- Recognized Brand
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
