Pre-1933 Gold
The U.S. Mint issued its first gold coins in 1795. During the height of the Great Depression in 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt prohibited American citizens from holding monetary gold. He ordered all gold coins be returned to the U.S. Treasury, where millions were melted down and then cast into gold bars. This was an unprecedented act to help fight the Great Depression. By doing so, many collectible gold coins were affected and the course of history for monetary gold was changed forever.
These federal government recalls and meltdowns made these previously common gold coins very rare. Today, the surviving pre-1933 Gold U.S. coins are fixed at an extremely limited supply. This fact has made pre-1933 Gold coins some of the most desirable items among investors and collectors. APMEX is proud to offer a superb selection of these harder-to-find classic coins. The historical significance of these coins is vitally important and will provide diversity and significance to any investment or collection.

Unbelievably this coin was advertised as ‘cleaned’ however I did not realize it would have nasty bits stuck to it as if it had been on someone’s tap shoe. it’s scuffed, bent and has metal glued to it where the letters have been defaced. I’m definitely not happy with my first purchase with Ampex!
- Cons
- Poor Condition
- Bottom Line
- No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I got 1899 date. It's my 1st 90% gold coin, i wasn't sure of size. FYI: it's just smaller than a quarter, larger then a nickel, and heavier then both. I'm very satisfied, i figured i should add a small amount of gold in with all this silver. :D
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Requested an 1800’s dated coin and got an 1880 with no mint mark in VF condition that was obviously cleaned. It’s a very neat little coin that showes it’s age and history. I would buy this lot agin as these coins are close to spot and honestly that is likely all you will get on resale of most any common date coin that is not slabbed in MS condition.
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Easy to Sell
- Cons
- Common (higher mintage)
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Collectible (lower mintage)
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
