Golden Opportunity
In the early 2000s, pre-1933 gold coins commanded exceptionally high premiums, often exceeding 200% above spot gold prices. These premiums were driven by strong collector demand, limited availability, and general enthusiasm for historic gold coins. Now is a rare opportunity to own Pre-33 $20 gold pieces at nearly decade-low premiums—levels we have not seen since 2018. These historic U.S. gold coins not only offer strong intrinsic value but currently trade at premiums equal to or even lower than modern 1 oz Gold Eagles. With similar gold content and added historical significance, Pre-33 $20 gold coins deliver exceptional value for collectors and investors alike.content and added historical significance, Pre-33 $20 gold coins deliver exceptional value for collectors and investors alike.
Pre-33 Gold Coins
Until 1933, when the United States removed the dollar from the gold standard, the U.S. Mint produced a variety of gold coins for use in commerce, ranging from the diminutive Gold Dollars up through the hefty $20 Gold Double Eagle, containing almost a full ounce of gold. While minted in large numbers, untold numbers of these Pre-1933 Gold coins were melted down in the 1930s as the United States government attempted to discontinue the circulation of gold, even going so far as to order the confiscation and mandatory buyback of gold coins held by citizens at the time, reducing the finite supply of these popular gold coins.
The Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin
Minted through 1907, the Liberty Double Eagle coin contains .9675 oz fine gold, alloyed with copper to improve its durability and wear characteristics. The design, introduced in 1850 by designer James Longacre, is one of the most iconic, easily recognizable images in numismatics. Due to the high value of U.S. $20 Gold coins, many were kept in limited circulation and stored away in vaults, making high-grade coins surprisingly attainable given their age. Due to their limited circulation use, the coins offered here will show nearly full detail of this classic design.

Bought several Longacres & Saint-Gaudens' from APMEX in 2022, for the beauty & historical aspects of these coins. That the price has more than doubled in four years is a nice coincidence! Folks sometimes mock me for my non-interest-bearing "investments," but there is something very reassuring about an asset that our ancestors of 100 generations back would instantly recognize as valuable. And APMEX has been flawless, in my experience. Thank you.

I bought two of these in BU condition in autumn of 2023. both were common dates and mints. 1900 S and 1893S. I had them professionally graded by PGCS. Both graded out to be MS 61. So I think when you buy these that’s about what you will get which is great. However, I would not expect a coin higher graded because once you get beyond that MS 61 or 62 the value goes up precipitously and theses are just not priced at that level. They know what they are doing and they know what they are selling. And that’s fine because you get a fine coin in truly BU condition. You might be able to get a graded MS 61 at less price at an online auction. It’s worth a look. It costs money to get them graded so if you get one at an auction price below what they are selling them here you made out. Anyway, hope this helps and puts these coins in some perspective.

I purchased 10 coins. Although the listing states that the dates are random, I was a bit disappointed that the dates I got weren't as mixed as I thought it would be. I got 3 1900 and 7 1907. I would purchase again but with lower expectations.

Recently I bought one of these BU Liberty double eagles. My coin arrived today, a spectacular 1904. What a beauty! Brilliant, jewel-like luster. I think this coin would easily grade as an MS-64. Maybe even MS-65. Needless to say, I am very pleased! Many of these double eagles were shipped to Europe in the early 1900's, then sent back to the US starting in the late 1970's. Lucky for us!
- Pros

- Common (higher mintage)
- Poor Condition
- Bottom Line

I just received my 1898 S gold $20 Liberty coin from APMEX and I was very pleased with it. I stepped up and bought it in BU condition and I have no complaints. I wanted it for a 'touch of history' that my family could enjoy and I think it fills that bill nicely. Now, they get to fight over who gets it when I am gone...

- Attractive Design
- Easy to Sell
- Mint Condition

Whether you are a collector of investor, paying the premium for BU condition is highly recommended. Upon receiving the 1896 coin, I examined the detail in Liberty's hair and crown, and the eagle's feathers and arrows, and all was as close to perfect as one might expect from a coin that has been handled gently. The value is there for whatever time I hold this coin, and then for the next owner too.
