    Pre-33 Gold Coins
Until 1933, when the United States removed the dollar from the gold standard, the U.S. Mint produced a variety of gold coins for use in commerce, ranging from the diminutive Gold Dollars up through the hefty $20 Gold Double Eagle, containing almost a full ounce of gold. While minted in large numbers, untold numbers of these Pre-1933 Gold coins were melted down in the 1930s as the United States government attempted to discontinue the circulation of gold, even going so far as to order the confiscation and mandatory buyback of gold coins held by citizens at the time, reducing the finite supply of these popular gold coins.

The Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin
Minted through 1907, the Liberty Double Eagle coin contains .9675 oz fine gold, alloyed with copper to improve its durability and wear characteristics. The design, introduced in 1850 by designer James Longacre, is one of the most iconic, easily recognizable images in numismatics. Due to the high value of U.S. $20 Gold coins, many were kept in limited circulation and stored away in vaults, making high-grade coins surprisingly attainable given their age. Due to their limited circulation use, the coins offered here will show nearly full detail of this classic design.

Beautiful coin!

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Childhood dream fulfilled. Since I was 10 years old I have looked at the Liberty Head Double Eagle in the coin collectors book and dreamed. Finally have one to hold and admire. I figured it would be a 1904 based on other reviews and mintage and indeed it is. It's a beautiful example and couldn't be happier with the purchase, service or the coin itself. Dream realized. Thanks Apmex!

Very happy

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I am blown away with this coin. It is dated 1904 and looks almost perfect. I honestly think it is an MS-65 or even possibly an MS-66. It's extra $$$ for a graded coin over buying a BU, but it is totally worth it! Thank you so much for picking me out a beautiful coin!

  • Pros
  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
  • Easy to Sell
  • Mint Condition
  • Recognized Brand
  • Bottom Line
  • Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Nice Coins for the price

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Ordered 3 of these and received all 1904's and that's what I thought I would receive. I expect some bag marks, but one was excessive (for me anyway) and requested a change out. APMEX customer service does an excellent job at making the customer happy. Got a replacement that went well with the other two. This grade of MS64 is a nice coin for a reasonable premium. Moving up one more notch to MS65 gets really pricey. Very happy with my purchase.

hard to find decent raw Libs

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

The choice in buying $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles is either raw coins or graded coins. The graded coins (PCGS or NGC) bear a premium over what the price of the raw coins are, but since its really hard to find nice raw $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles that are not extensively dinged and bag marked, I believe it is best to buy the graded coins, if for no reason other than esthetics let alone the maintenance of the ability to sell quickly if needed (raw Libs are very difficult to accurately grade, so buyers have a difficult time deciding on what is a fair price). I've bought both raw and graded Libs from APMEX. For this coin in particular, I'll only consider buying graded coins in the future. My comments on the $20 St Gaudens Gold Double Eagle differ. The St. Gaudens are much easier to accurately grade, both for me and for a potential buyer, so buying high quality raw coin makes some sense. However, if one wants to avoid grading opinion issues at the time of resale of the coin, it's probably best to still strongly consider graded St Gaudens coins from APMEX.
