1897-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-64 NGC
James B. Longacre (August 11, 1794 – January 1, 1869) was the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1844 until his death in 1869. He was born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, becoming an apprentice in an engraving firm. Longacre then moved to Philadelphia in 1811 to learn the art of bank note engraving. Longacre's success in designing coins has been attributed to his many years of engraving portraits, which gave him an understanding of how to depict a subject on a small scale.

In 1844, James B. Longacre became the Chief Engraver at the United States Mint after the resignation of William Kneass. When Longacre took over as Chief Engraver, he was given the task of designing new coinage for the mint. His most famous design is undoubtedly the Liberty Head $20 Gold coin, better known as the “Double Eagle”. This coin was first minted in 1849 and was produced until 1907. The design features a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse.

The James B. Longacre designs for the one cent piece, the nickel, and the Double Eagle are some of the most iconic coins in American history. These coins are all collector favorites and James B. Longacre is considered one of the greatest engravers of all time.
