This Silver Denarius was struck during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus, 193 - 211 A.D. This attractive coin has the unusual designation of being "Perhaps Plated" meaning that this coin may be a high grade ancient forgery.

During his reign, Septimius Severus increased the pay of his soldiers from 375 to 500 denarii per year. He fell fatally ill while on a campaign against the Scots in northern Britain, and on his death bed advised his two sons to "keep on good terms with each other, be generous with the soldiers, and take no heed of anyone else."
