MS-67+ NGC 1937 Texas Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar
This 1937 Half Dollar coin was authorized by the State of Texas, in cooperation with the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition, a ten-week event held at Fair Park in Dallas.
The obverse is nearly identical to that on the 1937 circulating Washington Quarter. Both were designed by John R. Sinnock and both feature an American Bald Eagle with a shield on its breast. On the 1937 Texas coin, the Eagle holds in its beak a ribbon bearing the State motto "Friendship." The reverse is also like that on the 1937 Washington Quarter and features an oil lamp with a star above it surrounded by a wreath of cotton and wheat.
Authorized just before the Exposition and struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, 1937 Texas cents are rare because of poor distribution.
