    Theodore Roosevelt National Park Coin
Theodore Roosevelt is noted as the founder of the National Parks System and subsequently the founder of one of the greatest American ideas bestowed upon the world. The Theodore Roosevelt National Park, located in North Dakota, was established as a national site in 1946. Before he was president, Roosevelt ventured to the Dakota Territory to hunt bison in 1883. The experience shaped his views on land use and nature conservation, which led to one of the greatest of American ideas: the creation of protected areas as National Parks. During his presidency, the conservation of resources was not necessarily valued for their intrinsic, natural beauty, but it was here in the wilderness that Roosevelt built a ranch and became inspired to campaign toward the preservation of land as parks.

Today the park has 70,000 acres, over 150 species of birds, elk deer, prairie dogs, and a 7-foot-tall fence for a large herd of American bison. The park has over 100 miles in trails and sightseeing opportunities with approximately 400,000 visitors a year.

The colorful Little Missouri River Badlands provides the dramatic scenic backdrop to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which memorializes the 26th president, also known as the "Rough Rider," for his enduring contributions to the conservation of our nation's resources. An abundance of native grasses provides sustenance for prairie dogs and large grazing animals while diverse habitats attract a great number of birds. Wildlife viewing is one of the most popular activities in the park. It was established as a national site in 1946.

The reverse of the beautiful coin commemorating the Theodore Roosevelt National Park was designed by AIP artist Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.
