The 1899 $5 Silver Certificate, nicknamed the "Indian Chief" note, is one of the most celebrated and visually stunning pieces in American numismatic history. Chief Running Antelope (Takoketawakokipapi) was a respected Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux leader and diplomat, yet the portrait depicts him wearing a Pawnee headdress rather than his own.
