The 1901 $10 United States Note is widely regarded as one of the most beautifully designed pieces of currency ever issued by the U.S. government. The bison depicted at the center is believed to be "Black Diamond," a famous American bison that resided at the Central Park Zoo in New York City and served as the model for the engraver. Flanking the bison are Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the leaders of the legendary Corps of Discovery expedition of 1804 to 1806, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase territory. Their journey opened the American West and stands as one of the great chapters in the nation's history. Issued as a Legal Tender Note, also known as a United States Note.
