Product Details
This 1903-O Morgan Dollar, graded MS-66 by NGC, embodies the distinctive character of coinage from the historic New Orleans Mint. Its rediscovery story, once thought exceedingly scarce in high grades, it reveals unexpected turns in U.S. coinage history.
The 1903-O Morgan Dollar holds a compelling history, particularly for those who appreciate the unique narrative behind a coin's journey through time. Initially, this particular issue from the New Orleans Mint, bearing its distinctive "O" mint mark, was considered a significant rarity in Mint State condition. Before the early 1960s, it was dubbed the "King of New Orleans Morgans," with only a handful of examples believed to exist in pristine grades, making it one of the most challenging Morgan Dollars to acquire in top-tier preservation.
However, the perceived rarity of the 1903-O issue dramatically shifted in October 1962. Hundreds of thousands of these uncirculated dollars were unexpectedly discovered in U.S. Treasury vaults, having been transferred from New Orleans to Philadelphia decades earlier and sealed away. This astonishing find transformed the coin's accessibility, offering collectors a unique opportunity to engage with this intriguing saga. Despite its original mintage of 4,450,000 pieces, a substantial portion of the 1903-O output, like many other silver dollars, was eventually melted under the Pittman Act of 1918. Yet, the surviving examples, especially those like this one certified at MS-66 by NGC, offer a tangible link to a significant period of American economic expansion and the unique operational history of the New Orleans Mint.
The obverse of this dollar presents George T. Morgan's iconic depiction of Lady Liberty, her profile graced with a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, symbolizing agricultural prosperity. Above her, the national motto "E Pluribus Unum" arcs, while thirteen stars encircle her portrait. The reverse features a majestic heraldic eagle, its wings spread wide, clutching both arrows of strength and an olive branch of peace, encircled by a wreath. Inscribed above the eagle is "In God We Trust," flanked by the declarations "United States of America" and the denomination "One Dollar." This specific coin, with a diameter of 38.1 mm and a thickness of 3.1 mm, contains 0.7734 troy ounces of .900 fine silver. It is a genuine example of American silver coinage, minted at the only Southern branch of the U.S. Mint to produce the Morgan Dollar, embodying a distinct historical character for those who value both precious metals and compelling narratives.
