1923 was the final year large-size $1 Silver Certificates were issued. Each note was originally backed by a silver, sitting in the U.S. Treasury, redeemable on demand. In 1929, the U.S. standardized all currency to the smaller format still used today — so this note sits right at the end of over 60 years of large-format American paper money. At roughly 7? × 3? inches (about 50% larger than modern notes), these earned the nickname "horse blankets."
