Product Details
The 1904-O Morgan Dollar, graded MS-64 by PCGS, was struck at the New Orleans Mint. This final-year issue marks the end of Morgan Dollar production at the “O” mint as mandated silver coinage wound down.
Imagine stepping back to 1904, a bustling year in American history, and holding a piece of it directly from the storied New Orleans Mint – a true Southern gem among U.S. coinage facilities. This particular 1904-O Morgan Dollar, certified MS-64 by PCGS, isn't just a coin; it's a tangible echo of a bygone era. With a mintage of 3,720,000, these dollars were the last of their kind to emerge from the "O" mint, which had been reactivated specifically for Morgan Dollar production following the Bland-Allison Act. The government's silver reserves for mandated coinage were dwindling, and soon, the doors of the New Orleans Mint would close to silver dollar production forever.
Designed by the masterful George T. Morgan, the obverse of this dollar features his iconic rendition of Lady Liberty. Modeled by the captivating Anna Willess Williams, Liberty wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, symbolizing American agricultural prosperity and freedom. Her gaze, directed left, is surrounded by thirteen stars, the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the year "1904." Flip the coin, and the reverse proudly displays a majestic bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows, encircled by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination "ONE DOLLAR." The distinctive "O" mint mark, signaling its New Orleans origin, is prominently located above the "DO" in "DOLLAR."
For decades, these 1904-O dollars were considered quite rare, especially in uncirculated condition like this MS-64 example. However, the early 1960s brought a fascinating plot twist when vast quantities were released from U.S. Treasury vaults, transforming them from elusive treasures to widely accessible pieces of history. This particular coin contains 0.7734 troy oz of .900 fine silver, with a standard gross weight of 26.73 grams (approximately 0.859 troy ounces). Its standard diameter is 38.1 mm and its thickness is 3.1 mm. Owning this 1904-O Morgan Dollar means holding a piece of the New Orleans Mint's legacy, a mint that uniquely struck coins for three different American governments, and a coin that tells a captivating tale of perceived rarity, historical mandates, and enduring American design. It's perfect for collectors who appreciate both numismatic artistry and the rich tapestry of U.S. history.
