Product Details
This exquisite 1904-O Morgan Dollar, graded MS-65 by PCGS, represents the final year of silver dollar production at the historic New Orleans Mint.
The year 1904 marked an important chapter for both the New Orleans Mint and the iconic Morgan Dollar. This particular coin, bearing the "O" mint mark, is a tangible piece of history, signifying the grand finale of silver dollar coinage from the storied New Orleans facility. With a mintage of 3,720,000, it stands as a testament to an era when the U.S. economy was thriving, shifting from an agrarian past to an industrial powerhouse, a time when real wages were rising and the nation cemented its status as a global economic leader.
Designed by the talented English engraver George T. Morgan, the obverse of this dollar features his famous rendition of Lady Liberty. Morgan sought to portray an American ideal, reportedly finding his inspiration in the profile of Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams. Her likeness, elegant and strong, gazes left, adorned with a Phrygian cap, a wreath of cotton and wheat, and the word "LIBERTY" on her headband, encircled by "E PLURIBUS UNUM," the year "1904," and thirteen stars. The reverse proudly displays a majestic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows, partially encircled by a wreath, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" inscribed along the rim. Just below the wreath, above the "DO" in "DOLLAR," is the "O" mint mark, silently declaring its New Orleans origin.
Crafted from .900 fine silver and .100 copper, this coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, boasting a diameter of 38.1 mm and a thickness of 3.1 mm. This specific 1904-O Morgan Dollar is certified in Mint State 65 (MS-65) by PCGS, indicating a coin with excellent strike, full original luster, and only a few minor contact marks, far exceeding the typical condition of coins from this era. This quality makes it a prime acquisition for both the discerning collector who cherishes historical significance and the investor looking to preserve wealth in a beautiful, tangible asset. It’s more than just a coin; it’s a direct link to America's Gilded Age, its industrial might, and the artistry that defined its currency.
