What is Junk Silver?
Junk Silver is a term used for any silver cull coins or Silver coins in fair condition with no numismatic value besides the bullion value of the Silver it contains. The word “junk” refers only to the coins’ value as collectibles and not to the actual condition of the coins; Junk Silver is not synonymous with scrap Silver. Pre-1965 90% Silver coins were pulled from circulation with the introduction of Copper and Nickel clad coins and Silver’s rising demand. The public saved them for their 90% Silver content as a rainy day fund to fall back on.
About Washington Quarters
The Washington Quarter was first struck in 1932; sculptor John Flanagan designed the original version. To celebrate the 1932 bicentennial of the birth of its first president, George Washington, members of the bicentennial committee sought a Washington half dollar. They wanted to displace the regular issue Walking Liberty Half Dollar for that year only; instead, Congress permanently replaced the Standing Liberty Quarter, requiring that a depiction of Washington appear on the obverse of the new coin.
The U.S. Mint
The U.S. Mint has been the producer of some of the most iconic coins in U.S. history. The Washington Quarter series is another testament to the Mint’s craftsmanship, offering a timeless piece of American numismatic heritage. - Specifications

This was my very first purchase on APMEX. I made that purchase March 2019. I had never held so many silver coins at one time. I went through the bag and was very pleased with what I viewed. I can’t say every coin was in stellar condition. But for what I intended them (bartering when the dollar goes belly up) for they didn’t need to be. Anyway, looking back on that purchase it turns out to have been one of my very best as far as growth value. It has doubled...how cool is that.
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

I bought the $100 bag of Washington Quarters expecting mostly 1960s dated coins. The coin count was totally correct. Much to my amazement I got about 6 from the 1930s, dozens from the 1940s and 1950s. I got one dateless standing liberty and one 1926 standing liberty. Many mintmarked. I could easily make a pretty complete date set out of these, and some were in higher grade so I can upgrade my own Washington Set. Very pleased with the order.
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Easy to Sell
- Recognized Brand
- Cons
- Common (higher mintage)
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Not surprisingly there was high percentage of 1964 & 1964-D, but for stacking silver that's fine. The remaining coins were a good mix of dates and mint marks, a few semi-key dates and a 1930s AU coin that would easily retail for $30-35 on its own. All in all I was very pleased. When compared to a bag from a local coin shop this one had a substantially more diverse sampling of different coins.
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

previously had gotten mostly avg circulated coins in my bulk silver bags with only one or two smooth coins, however this one had 10 dateless, smooth Standing Liberty quarters and about the same or more smooth Washington quarters. I'll check the weight when I get time but will likely be disappointed there as well.
- Pros
- Easy to Sell
- Recognized Brand
- Cons
- Poor Condition
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
