Chartered in 1833, Citizens' Bank was the largest financial institution in the South, with an initial capitalization of $12 million — second only to the Second Bank of the United States nationally. Headquartered in New Orleans, it was a plantation bank, meaning its reserves weren't funded by paid-in capital but by investors mortgaging land (and enslaved people) in exchange for bank shares — a distinctly Southern antebellum financing structure. - Specifications
