    History and Design

The 1940 Mercury Dime, also known as the 1940 silver dime, holds a special place in numismatic history. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, this coin features a stunning depiction of Liberty wearing a winged cap, commonly mistaken for the Roman god Mercury. The obverse showcases intricate details, including Liberty's flowing hair and the inscription "LIBERTY" on top. On the reverse, there is a fasces, symbolizing unity and strength, along with an olive branch, representing peace. The 1940 Mercury Dime is highly regarded for its exquisite design, which captures the essence of American coinage during that era.

    Numismatic Value

The 1940 Mercury Dime holds significant numismatic value for collectors and enthusiasts. Its silver content alone makes it an attractive investment for those seeking to add precious metals to their portfolios. Furthermore, the 1940 Mercury Dime is sought after for its historical significance and rarity. While millions of these dimes were minted, finding one in high-grade condition can be a challenge, contributing to its value among collectors. The condition, scarcity, and demand for the 1940 silver dime all play a role in determining its numismatic worth.

Good!

I’ve purchased dozens of these BU 1940-1945 mercury dimes over the years. Only a couple have ever had full split bands. They’re usually in really good shape but the center bands on reverse are never split. Once I got one that had a lot of tarnish on it but it had full bands. You really never know what you’re going to get. It all depends on what they have on hand at the time of purchase. I still think they’re worth it!
