MS-65+ PCGS 1911-D Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle
Augustus Saint-Gaudens was one of America's foremost sculptors and his design for the Gold Double Eagle is regarded as one of the most beautiful ever to grace an American coin. Saint-Gaudens’ work can be seen at locations across the country, including New York City's Central Park, where his statues of General William Tecumseh Sherman and Augustus Saint-Gaudens himself overlook the park from their perches atop grand pedestals.
In addition to his many public sculptures, Saint-Gaudens also designed several coins and medals. His most famous coin design is the Gold Double Eagle, which was minted from 1907 until 1933. Augustus Saint-Gaudens died in 1907 before the design could be completed, so Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, Charles E. Barber, made some modifications to the original sketches and put the design into production.
The result was a stunning coin that is highly sought after by collectors and investors today. The Gold Double Eagle was recalled in 1933 by President Franklin Roosevelt and most of the coins were melted down. A small number are believed to have been saved by enterprising individuals and these rare survivors are highly prized by collectors today.
