The $500 Federal Reserve Note of the 1934 series was introduced during the tumultuous Great Depression, a critical period in American economic history. These high-denomination notes, alongside $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 bills, were primarily utilized for interbank transactions and substantial financial transfers, predating the widespread adoption of electronic banking. Their issuance was authorized under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration, following the nation's departure from the gold standard in 1933, signifying a profound shift in monetary policy.
While the last $500 bills were printed in 1945, the Federal Reserve System officially discontinued them on July 14, 1969. This decision was largely due to limited public use and increasing concerns regarding their potential involvement in illicit activities. Despite their withdrawal from circulation, these notes retain their legal tender status at face value, though their numismatic significance and collector value today far surpass this nominal sum.
