Sacagawea Dollar Coins

The Sacagawea Dollar is one of the most recognizable modern U.S. coins, celebrated for its unique golden appearance, historical significance, and connection to one of America’s most influential historical figures. First released by the United States Mint in 2000, the Sacagawea Dollar honors Sacagawea, the Shoshone woman who assisted the Lewis and Clark Expedition during its journey across the American frontier. She mapped the frontier not yet traveled by white men and acted as a translator for the expedition. She brought her infant son along with her for the entire journey.

The Sacagawea Dollars were first issued in 2000 to honor Sacagawea. The obverse was designed by Glenna Goodacre and depicts Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean-Baptiste. The reverse design for the original 2000–2008 issue features a soaring eagle created by Thomas D. Rogers Sr., symbolizing peace and freedom.

History of the Sacagawea Dollar

The Sacagawea Dollar was authorized by the United States Congress through the United States $1 Coin Act of 1997. One of the most distinctive characteristics of the Sacagawea Dollar is its golden appearance. Although the coin looks like gold, it does not contain any actual gold content. Instead, it is struck from a manganese-brass clad composition layered over a copper core. This composition gives the coin its unique color while also improving durability for circulation.

Beginning in 2009, the Native American $1 Coin Program was introduced. The coins in this series have annually changing reverse designs to celebrate Native American contributions, achievements, and history throughout the United States. The obverse of the coins in this series features the Sacagawea Dollar’s obverse.

Collecting Sacagawea Dollars

Sacagawea Dollars remain a popular choice among modern U.S. coin collectors because they combine historical significance with distinctive modern designs. Because many Sacagawea Dollars saw limited circulation, collectors can often find high-quality, Brilliant Uncirculated examples, making the series approachable for both new and experienced numismatists.

Sacagawea Dollars pair well with other modern U.S. dollar coin series, especially for collectors interested in the evolution of American coinage. Many collectors build sets that include Susan B. Anthony Dollars, Presidential Dollars, Native American Dollars, Eisenhower Dollars, and historic silver dollars like Morgans or Peace Dollars. Together, these coins showcase the changing designs, compositions, and historical themes featured on U.S. dollar coins throughout American history. Sacagawea Dollars also make meaningful gifts for collectors, history enthusiasts, and young numismatists.
