Product Details
Journey back to a pivotal era of American history with an exquisite Morgan Dollar, graded a superb MS-65 by NGC.
The Morgan Silver Dollar, an iconic emblem of American numismatics, was born from the fervent economic and political landscape of the late 19th century. Its inception in 1878 marked the reintroduction of the standard silver dollar, mandated by the Bland-Allison Act—a legislative response to the "Crime of '73" and the burgeoning "free silver" movement. This era was a clash of ideals, where the future of the nation's currency hung in the balance, a struggle encapsulated in the very metal of this coin.
Designed by the brilliant English-born engraver George T. Morgan, this dollar stands as a testament to his skill. The majestic obverse features a striking profile of Lady Liberty, a departure from traditional allegorical figures as Morgan famously modeled her after the real American schoolteacher, Anna Willess Williams. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, adorned with symbols of America's agricultural prosperity—wheat and cotton—all encircled by the rallying cry "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the year of mintage. The reverse presents a powerful heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, grasping both arrows of war and an olive branch of peace, a profound symbol of the nation’s readiness for defense coupled with its desire for tranquility. A laurel wreath gracefully frames the eagle, with Morgan's initial 'M' discreetly placed on the bow of the wreath, and the mint mark (varying by year and mint) signifying its origin from the U.S. Mint facilities such as Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, or Carson City.
Each Morgan Dollar contains a substantial .900 (90%) pure silver content, totaling 0.7734 troy ounces of silver, with a diameter of 38.1 mm and a thickness of 3.1 mm. The vast mintage of these coins, especially between 1878 and 1904, saw hundreds of millions struck. However, the Pittman Act of 1918 led to the melting of over 270 million Morgan Dollars, diminishing their surviving numbers and adding to their historical intrigue. To acquire a Morgan Dollar in MS-65 (Mint State-65) grade, as certified by NGC, is to possess a coin that exhibits a high degree of luster and sharpness of strike, with only minor contact marks that are not easily seen without magnification. This remarkable preservation allows one to appreciate the intricate details of Morgan's design as vividly as collectors did over a century ago. This product offers a random mint year and mint mark, adding an element of exciting discovery to each acquisition. For the discerning collector, an MS-65 Morgan Dollar is not merely a coin; it is a tangible link to a transformative period in American history, an enduring symbol of liberty, and a cornerstone asset for any serious numismatic portfolio.
