The minting of Silver Morgan Dollars was a result of the Bland-Allison Act that reinstated Silver as legal tender in February 1878. Before 1878, production of Silver Dollars and other Silver coinage had been halted under the Coinage Act of 1873, and this left Gold as the standard economic unit of account. Silver coins had become devalued for multiple reasons, including the discovery of the largest Silver vein in world history. By 1878, Congress decided that U.S. coins should be both Silver and Gold, and therefore, Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase a fixed amount of each month to be minted into Silver coinage.
The U.S. Mint
The U.S. Mint has been the producer of some of the most iconic coins in U.S. history. The Morgan Dollar series is another testament to the Mint’s craftsmanship, offering a timeless piece of American numismatic heritage. - Specifications

Though this was a random year selection, we were really hoping for one dated in the 1800s. We are not "Morgan" collectors, but having one that pre-dates the 1900s was a must have for our collection. The coin was in great shape, so thank you APMEX for continuing to impress us with your products.

I ordered one of these coins and received an 1886-P Morgan Dollar. While the typical response would be to gripe about receiving a high-mintage coin, I will not this time, as the 1886-P Morgan Dollar was the very first coin that I ever collected (a gift from my uncle when I was seven years old). Sadly, that first coin is long-gone now, since I had to sell it when I began college, but I was pleasantly surprised to receive this coin. Other than that, the coin was in excellent condition. There was no unattractive discoloration. Thank you, APMEX!
