Morgan Silver Dollars
The minting of Silver Morgan Dollars was a result of the Bland-Allison Act that reinstated Silver as legal tender in February 1878. Before 1878, production of Silver Dollars and other Silver coinage had been halted under the Coinage Act of 1873, and this left Gold as the standard economic unit of account. Silver coins had become devalued for multiple reasons, including the discovery of the largest Silver vein in world history. By 1878, Congress decided that U.S. coins should be both Silver and Gold, and therefore, Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase a fixed amount of silver each month to be minted into Silver coinage.

Nice coin

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Nice condition overall. Some scratches or "bag marks" but less than I expected and while it isn't perfect, the finish does still seem to retain a fair amount of the original mint luster. I guess I would agree that this is a BU, for whatever my armature opinion is worth. With Morgan dollars getting harder to find these days, I'm glad I made this purchase.

  • Pros
  • Attractive Design
  • Bottom Line
  • Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Excellent value for the money

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Bought one. Common date as expected. Full luster. A fair number of light bag marks, but nothing that distracts. If it was slabbed I'm guessing it would go MS62 or 61. Uncleaned. I am happy with this purchase.

Common year and mint, but, an exceptional specimen! Lady Liberty has a minor abrasion on her cheek and that's it. Not bad at all for a first purchase. Thanks apmex
