Morgan Silver Dollars (1878-1904, 1921)

Morgan Silver Dollar

(1878-1904, 1921)

Heralded as best and most beautiful of all the Silver Dollar designs, the Morgan Silver Dollar was immediately embraced by U.S. citizens when it debuted in 1878. Production of this coin continued thorough 1904, when it was replaced by the Peace Dollar, but popularity was so high, the Morgan design was produced again for one year in 1921.

The design of the Morgan Silver Dollar shared some features of the Bust Silver Dollar but is much more detailed. Coin collectors always hope to find a carefully preserved coin that has avoided the wear of circulation or careless storage. As these coins are all over or approaching 100 years old, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a Morgan Silver Dollar that appears to be untouched by the hands of time.

Morgan Silver Dollar Values

Morgan Silver Dollar values are something one cannot easily determine until you are holding the specific coin in question. This is due to the many different variables influencing the value of these coins. Depending on the scarcity and condition of the coin in question, you could pay as little as $10 to as much as $100 or more for a Morgan Silver Dollar.

Naturally, coins that have benefited from careful preservation are the ones that will command the highest prices in the coin market. Additionally, the earlier Morgan Silver Dollars also tend to carry higher premiums. If you are fortunate enough to locate an early Morgan in well-preserved condition, allot at least $100 to add it to your collection.

Highly Sought Morgan Silver Dollars

The most sought-after Morgan Silver Dollars are certainly those sporting the best condition after so many years filled with the risk of wear and damage. To collectors, well-preserved coins are always the preferred addition to every collection. Unfortunately, coins of this age are rarely found in pristine condition. Further, collectors covet the earliest Morgan Silver Dollars. Coins produced in 1878 and 1879 are especially popular as they are the oldest available on the market today.

Pristine coins from the 1870s command higher premiums than most other Morgan Silver Dollars. There were often three or more different varieties of Morgan Dollars struck each year of production, so it is important to remember that some versions of the coin, such as the 1878-CC, are especially valuable and difficult to find.
