This America the Beautiful Quarter honors the beautiful Denali National Park, located in interior Alaska. The reverse of the coin features a Dall sheep with Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, rising in the background. At 20,320 feet above sea level, Denali is the highest mountain in North America. Denali is also the third most prominent peak in the world, behind Mount Everest and Aconcagua.

Established as a national site in 1917, the park was created to protect wildlife populations such as grizzly bears, caribou, Dall sheep and moose. In 1980, the park was expanded from 2 million to more than 6 million acres, of which about 16% is covered in glaciers.
