The minting of Silver Morgan Dollars was a result of the Bland-Allison Act that reinstated Silver as legal tender in February 1878. Before 1878, production of Silver Dollars and other Silver coinage had been halted under the Coinage Act of 1873, and this left Gold as the standard economic unit of account. Silver coins had become devalued for multiple reasons, including the discovery of the largest Silver vein in world history. By 1878, Congress decided that U.S. coins should be both Silver and Gold, and therefore, Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase a fixed amount of each month to be minted into Silver coinage.
The U.S. Mint
The U.S. Mint has been the producer of some of the most iconic coins in U.S. history. The Morgan Dollar series is another testament to the Mint’s craftsmanship, offering a timeless piece of American numismatic heritage. - Specifications

I received my first Morgan today and I'm so excited! I love it! It's a 1897, worn down but not to the point where you can't see it. From what I've heard about culls, this one is on the upper end. I wonder whose hands held it, maybe Wyatt Earp or Doc Holiday...how many poker games has it been through. I love having a piece of history from the 1800's and the stories it holds. Thank you APMEX.
- Pros
- Attractive Design
- Collectible (lower mintage)
- Recognized Brand
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

First of all for “cull” Morgan’s, which my LCS says hasn’t been available for years!!!, you really get a variety of dollars years (1878-1900) and conditions (dents, scratches, poor grade to XF almost AU) it is a value both for stacking and numismatics (Mints from Philadelphia, New Orleans)! And all I can says is you can see and feel the fact these coins were in our forefathers hands too.
- Pros
- Attractive Design
- Easy to Sell
- Recognized Brand
- Cons
- Common (higher mintage)
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
